And the grey days of April bring leaves that look like tiny flames.

I spent a year recording Dusk Among the Plum Trees in my home studio in the Junction, Toronto. I mostly used acoustic guitars, vintage synths, pianos and some orchestral sounds. Then the music was mixed and mastered by Andy Magoffin at the House of Miracles in Cambridge, Ontario.

The inspiration for the album title came last winter when my friend was talking about his family’s plum trees and the process of making homemade brandy. I had this picture in my mind of a dusky sky above plum trees. Later I started writing a song called “Dusk Among the Plum Trees” that I never finished. But I still liked the title. It conjures up images of dusk and night and I think most of the songs on the album fit with that. I had also been reading a lot of Japanese poetry, which often references plum trees, so I think that was also part of the inspiration.
